In Windows XP :-
Click on Start button,
then you get a popup menu in that choose Control Panel.
Click on System option.
Now you will get System Properties window.
(or)
Right click on My computer icon. Now you will get a shot cut
menu in that choose Properties option.
Now you will get System Properties window.
In System Properties windows , Click on “Advanced” tab. Now under “Performance” click on “Settings” button. Now you will get performance option window.
Now by clicking on “Advanced” tab you will get the following window.
Now click on Change
button under Virtual Memory.
Now under “ Drive
[Volume Label ]”, click
the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change. .Under “Paging
file size for selected drive”, click to Custom size check box. You
can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by
entering the initial and maximum size. Then click on “Set” button. Then restart your system to apply the settings.
Note:
for better Performance , both "Initial size and Maximum size should be same".
That is 1.5 times to RAM Capacity. For example your Ram Size is 1 GB(1024 MB),
you should set the size is 1.5*1024= 1536.
In
Windows 7:-
Click on Start button,
then you get a popup menu in that choose Control Panel.In control Panel click on System and Security option
Now
you will get System and Security window. In that click on System option.
Now
you will get System window, in that on
left side Click on Advanced system settings option.
(or)
Right Click
on Computer which is on
desktop and choose Properties option.
(or)
Click
on start button you will get a popup menu , in that right click on Computer option
and choose Properties option.
Now
you will get System Properties window , in that click on Advanced tab.
Now
click on Settings button under Performance.
Now you will get Performance Options window, in that click
on Advanced tab.
Now click on Change button under Virtual memory.
In that choose required Drive and Enter Initial size and Maximum size under
Custom size then click on set button. Then restart your system to apply the settings.
Note:-
for better Performance , both Initial size and Maximum size should be same.

Note:-
If virtual memory is not sufficient you will get the following pop up message, and reduces system performance.
"Windows- Virtual memory
minimum too low. Your System is low on
virtual memory . Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging
file. During this process , memory requests for some applications may be
denied."
To reduce the above notification and increase Systme performance follow the above process.
